Anecdotes
This movie was originally titled "Slammer" until Madonna wrote "Who's That Girl" and decided to use it as the theme song. The song went to #1 on the Billboard chart in August 1987.

Gaffes
When Loudon flips through the prenuptial agreement, the first few text pages he flips through are identical. When he gets to the sexual-position diagrams, the various icons repeat on various pages. This is Wendy's father's way of overkill because he wants to make sure she and Loudon don't have sex.

An animated Nikki Finn opens up the Warner Bros logo and steps out. She then sets off a musical number ("Causing a Commotion") that covers the opening titles and recaps the events that put Nikki in prison.

Versions alternatives
The BBFC in 1987 cut the film both for cinema release and domestic video, with cuts totaling 1 min 43 secs, to the scene where Madonna is shopping with Griffin Dunne in the record store and can be seen putting cassettes into her own pockets and into a shoplifter's pocket to frame him, cuts were waived on the 07/03/2006 with a PG cert, although the Uncut version played on television channels in the early 90's

Fun movie that deserves another look

A reworking of a screwball comedy classic, Bringing Up Baby, with Madonna of all people shouldn't work. This one somehow does, thanks mostly to the two leads. Yes, Madonna is a limited actress and not every scene is perfect, but she does an admirable job bringing a fun and likable character to life. Most importantly it doesn't just feel like she's playing herself. The criminally underrated Griffin Dunne deserves a lot of praise, as well. He was my favorite part of the movie. I think he elevates the material and gets the best out of Madonna in their scenes together. I wish he had done more crazy comedies like this because he's very good at it.

It's not a flawless film and I certainly understand the complaints. The fair ones, at least, not the petty ones. But it's a very fun comedy with a quick pace and likable actors. What's Up Doc is still probably the best modern screwball comedy I've seen but this one is nothing to dismiss. Try to leave preconceptions about Madonna or the film's reputation at the door and give it a fair shot. I think you'll be happily surprised.
