This obscure Japanese drama dwells on the loneliness of a middle-aged man who has suffered from impotency since he witnessed the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. Feeling cut off from society, he retires to his country home where he confesses to his housekeeper his psychosomatic affliction. With the coming of spring, the housekeeper suggests that he observe a custom in which the young men of a village have sex with village women. This attempt to rehabilitate is a bizarre unintentionally laughable remedy. The plot then returns to its original dour mood and creeps ever so slowly along -- possibly because it really has nowhere to go.
