The first Super Mario game where you don't lose lives when you die. You lose 10 coins instead.

Gaffes
In the beginning, Cappy turns into Mario's hat and then Mario throws Cappy and then puts him back on his head. Cappy never told him he would come back, so how would Mario know that after throwing Cappy he would come back.

Versions alternatives
The Chinese version has several changes upon the Tencent' release in order to comply with the country's video game regulations:
The Pirate Outfit has the skull and eye patch removed and has been renamed "Noble Outfit", while the Pirate Hat has become "Noble Hat".
The world maps have the English names, including coordinate numbers and letters, removed. The maps both in-game and on the cartridge and download cards have been affected by this change.

The Biggest Mario Ever!

This is the biggest Mario game I've ever played. It's a blender combination of Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine and Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2. It has fantastic environments with graphics I'd never expect in a cartridge that's smaller than a DS cartridge.
