Alexander and Ilya Salkind sold the Superman movie rights to Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus of The Cannon Group in June 1985 for $5 million. The sale took place during negotiations at the 38th Cannes Film Festival. After the release of Superman 4 under Cannon Films, the Salkinds bought the rights back and Ilya Salkind commissioned a fifth Superman script before Warner Bros. acquired the rights entirely in 1993.
