When it comes to "Getting the gang together" movies, it's nearly impossible to bring something new to the table. This one does just that while also being a sincere love letter to pro wrestling.
An Alien force arrives on Earth and begins possessing the people in Florida (so THAT'S their problem!). It's up to Ray Lloyd (whom wrestling fans may remember as Glacier from WCW) to assemble a team of fellow wrestlers to stop the alien menace from consuming the town. This sounds corny - and it is - but it's done in a way that is entertaining and fun. You get a true sense of camaraderie among the cast - the kind of camaraderie that can only be attained through years of traveling the world together and wrestling in front of thousands of people. And here, they are basically playing themselves.
While being an ensemble team story where the good guys fight an alien, this is far different from something like "Predator", where the threat is a singular entity. Instead, the alien is something like John Carpenter's "The Thing", and the townsfolk become zombie-like beings with glowing green eyes. I get a retro b-movie vibe with shades of Carpenter. There are stock footage shots of wrestling matches as we are introduced to each recruit. Along with Ray Lloyd are legendary wrestlers such as Tonga Fifita (Meng/Haku), Stan Hansen, and Larry Zbyszco to name a few. They are all ready to fight and obviously having loads of fun.
As the title suggests, The Unbreakable Bunch follows the same formula as films like "The Magnificent Seven" or "The Dirty Dozen" but adds it's own spin. The main focus is not the plot itself but the sense of brotherhood felt. I can forgive the choppy editing and the fact that guns seem to never run out of ammo. For me, it's about the love of pro wrestling and the unbreakable bond that can overcome any obstacle. Funny thing is, there are probably crazier stories these guys have in real life than fighting aliens!
