When Chicago Sun-Times movie critic Richard Roeper arrived for his turn as one of the guest critics in the months after Gene Siskel's death, the entire crew plus Chaz Ebert told Roger to hire him immediately. Roger apparently didn't want to hire a critic from the same newspaper as his own (Gene was famously from the competing TRIBUNE) but Chaz won him over by pointing out that the show no longer needed that kind of rivalry to be successful.
