- AnecdotesAt a 2015 Q&A at BAM Cinematek, John Korty revealed why there was a version of the film with strong language. The film was always intended to be appropriate for young children, and Korty's final cut was almost identical to the 1991 home video release. After answer prints had been made based off his final cut, Korty went to New York to begin pre-production on another project while test screenings of "Twice Upon a Time" were taking place in California. Bill Couturié one of the film's producers and co-writers, noted that college-aged audience members frequently walked out during the first ten minutes. After nearly the entire audience at a screening at USC walked out, Couturié reassembled some of the voice actors to record more profane versions of the film's dialogue in the hopes that it would keep teens and adults interested enough to watch the film to completion. John Korty was kept completely out of the loop on these changes, and didn't find out until he was watching the film at its premiere. Korty was furious, even more so when he found out release prints were made using this more profane version. Theater programmers didn't know these changes had been made either, and one of the few theaters in the country to show the film on its original release ran it on a double bill with the G-rated Brisby et le secret de NIMH (1982). When outraged parents notified theater management, Twice was pulled from further showings.

- Autres versionsThere are two major versions of the film. John Korty's original version, and a version which added profanity and vulgar dialogue to several scenes (Botch's opening monologue to his minions, Botch's dialogue while he's in his bathtub, Botch ordering his minions out to get the spring, Botch's ecstatic response when Rudy returns with the spring, and some muttering by Scuzzbopper after his manuscript was dropped from the Murkworks (through a window) by Botch). This latter version had a very limited theatrical release in 1983, and was shown at least twice on HBO in 1984-1985 (see Trivia for why there were two versions in the first place). Warner Archive's 2015 DVD version gives viewers the option to watch the film with the original audio or the more vulgar re-recorded dialogue.

Altogether one of the finest (and funniest) animated films ever to come out of Hollywood, Twice Upon A Time is a lovingly crafted valentine to dreamers of all kinds! Extremely witty writing makes it as enjoyable for grown-ups as it is for children. Especially effective is Marshall Efron's performance as the evil villain of the picture, Synonamess Botch! My only negative comment about the video is that they have edited his dialogue in order to change and/or eliminate many of his funniest (and rudest) comments. While this was certainly necessary so that children could watch it, I wish they could have released (or will release) an un-edited version. Luckily I taped the original when it aired on cable many years ago, so I still have it to watch, and it never fails to induce serious amounts of laughter when I do. Still, I cannot recommend the edited version highly enough!
This film deserves so much more recognition than it has gotten!
