Geraldine Brooks and Dane Clark in Embraceable You (1948)

The killer and his driver Eddie Novoc accidentally run over Marie Willens while fleeing a murder scene. The pursuing detective Matt Hethron is sure that Eddie is guilty, but he cannot prove it. Instead of pressing his case, Hethron has Eddie begin caring for Marie who received a massive blood clot from the accident and does not have long to live. As time passes, Eddie finds himself falling in love with Marie. To raise the needed money for her care, Eddie starts blackmailing gang kingpin Sig Ketch.

The pinball machine beside the phone booth at Sammy's place - seen behind Eddie as he's playing with a toy car on a counter - is a "Silver Streak" model by Bally from 1947. The company produced a different machine with the same name in 1935.

Gaffes
When Eddie pulls up to the Moderne Bar & Grill, the camera pushes in toward the driver's side window of his car, and a moving shadow of the camera falls across the door-frame and roof of the car.

A Well Made Romantic Film with a Twist

I saw this film with my mother when I was 7 and haven't seen it since, but I just can't forget it---it is that powerful. Haven't been able to find it anywhere, which means there's a copyright problem! Maybe someday it will be released. Or perhaps remade, but updated for today's environment.
