As I stumbled upon this 2018 Vietnamese comedy titled "Hon Papa Da Con Gái" (aka "Daddy Issue") here in 2023, I had actually never heard about it. But seeing that it was starring Thai Hoa, Vietnam's most funny comedy actor, and with it being an Asian movie that I hadn't already seen, of course I had to watch it.
And I must admit that I was harboring some expectations to the movie, given the track record of leading actor Thai Hoa.
However, writer Michael Thai managed to put together a weak imitation of the numerous other body-switch movies that came before this 2018 movie. So you're not in for anything new, innovative, or actually particularly entertaining here. In fact, the movie failed to capture my interest and I gave up on watching it out of sheer and utter boredom about halfway through. "Hon Papa Da Con Gái", from director Ken Ochiai, was a swing and a miss.
The acting performances in the movie were fair enough, though the actors and actresses had very little to work with in terms of script, adequate storyline or characters that actually mean something to the audience. So it was an uphill battle for the cast ensemble. It was a disappointing movie notched unto the acting career of Thai Hoa, but then again, not everything he touches can turn to gold, right?
I have zero intentions of ever returning to attempt to finish watching "Hon Papa Da Con Gái", as the movie utterly failed to entertain me. And it is definitely not a movie that I would recommend fans of the Asian cinema to waste their time, money or effort on. There are far better English language body-swap movies readily available out there.
My rating of "Hon Papa Da Con Gái" lands on a very generous three out of ten stars.
