Emily: [Brent is holding up his phone off-screen, which shows a tweet from Jess: "#daterapist Brent Davick you can darken the night but I know what you did. DNA doesn't lie" and a side profile picture of him is shown. Brent silently moves his lips as he looks at the tweet and scrolls and sees who liked it, and he stops at Eharding98 and he angles his phone until it falls on his face and he falls into thought. Cut to Jess walking to her vehicle and Brent indirectly watching her from his own vehicle. She carefully gets in and starts the car and begins maneuvering it to drive away. She drives past Brent, who is blended in with the rest of the cars, hiding his face. He looks at her, maneuvers himself and follows her. Cut to Emily's school] Sorry. I didn't mean to stare.
Jess: [unapologetic] I'm a lot bigger because of the twins.
Emily: You know, it kinda makes me feel like I'm lucky in a way.
[Jess' face is frozen in a smile]
Emily: I mean, Brent raped me, but I didn't get pregnant.
[sinister music as Brent is studying them from his vehicle, both seated on a stone bench talking]
Jess: Can I ask you, how much do you remember?
Emily: Not a lot... we'd gone out a couple of times. The third time, he wanted to sleep with me and I said no. He seemed okay with it, so he took me home... except I don't remember getting home. I just remember the next morning knowing he'd... I had a rape kit and a drug test done. I had everything I needed to nail him and then his father offered us a deal. I know how that makes and my parents look, but it was the only way I was able to go to college.
Jess: It's okay.
Emily: No, it's not. Because look at what happened to you.
[the music darkens and Brent is seen again staring at them intently]
Emily: I don't care about this deal. Let them sue me; I am gonna talk...
[shakes her head]
Emily: so he can't ever do this again.
[sensitive music is heard and Jess gives her Murray's card]
Jess: Here.
[sinister music plays once again and Brent still studies them intently and curiously]
Emily: [looks at card and back at Jess] I have to get back to class.
Jess: Yeah, okay.
Emily: I'm gonna go home and talk to my parents. I have to tell them what I'm gonna do. They signed the deal, too, but tomorrow, I promise that I'll talk to this detective.
Jess: Thank you, Emily.
Emily: [sincerely] Good luck. With everything.
Jess: Thanks.
[begins gathering her things and heartfelt music plays in the background]
Emily: Yeah.
Jess: Bye.
[stands and leaves and now foreboding music plays and Brent's point of view is seen and the camera cuts to third person and shows him getting out of the vehicle]
Emily: [on the phone, walking] Yeah. That's great, Mom. Alright. I'll see you in about an hour.
[hangs up the phone and Brent immediately gets in her path]
Brent: Why were you talking to Jess?
Emily: Did you follow me?
Brent: You better not be planning on breaking the deal. My father will sue you.
Emily: Leave me alone.
Brent: I hope you have like a million dollars. Because you're gonna need it.
Emily: You and your dad don't call the shots anymore, Brent. Sue all you'd like.
[mysterious music as they are paused in front of each other for a second and she walks past him and he looks back at her]
1) The guy's dad bribed the first rape victim and attempted to bribe Jess as well. Hush money given like this is not a legal binding contract.
2) Along the lines of blackmail, one of the teens was scared into not providing testimony from the night of the incident, as Brent's dad threatened to share that this witness had a DUI conviction. I don't see how that should be a deterrent. Any applicant is obligated to self-report past criminal convictions, and DUI's are public records. Most reputable colleges run background checks anyhow, and are bound to find out about it.
3) It's just so convenient that the alleged rapist and the victim still attend school and interact with one another. Plus Jess miraculously gets an entire group of people at a soccer stadium to hold up signs condemning Brent.
4) Brent's first rape victim is driving down a stretch of road and is being followed by Brent (she likely doesn't know it's him). How about driving to a public place or pulling over and calling the cops?
5) Rich dad just so happens to not lock his gun in a safe, and when he realizes it's missing he ends up in Jess' backyard right before his son is about to kill her. Hopefully he called the cops for backup.
Combined with the above stupidity, the last 20 minutes of this movie was exceedingly melodramatic. As for any positives - some of the older actors do a quality job. The high school characters are all cardboard cutouts.
