Verdict
I don't know what this sub-genre is called but my first of its kind was Brotato (2022) and I adored it, offensively addictive, limitless possibilities and so very much fun! Because of this I learned about Vampire Survivors and the general consensus seemed to be that this was the "Daddy" of the sub-genre so I was excited to jump in. But was it everything it was hyped to be? Absolutely.
You see the game looks like it belongs on the Amstrad CPC, but as a person who grew up with those types of games this is not only not a problem but also kind of appreciated. Furthermore the game has so remarkably much content and things to unlock the replay value is immense. And then there is the general premise, the concept, what this sub genre is and it's fantastic. It's bizarre in the sense that on the surface it looks like simplicity defined and yet the game has a steep learning curve and at the end game quite the difficult spike.
And then there is the addictiveness element, yeesh! This is the definition of a "One more game" type. Each time I find myself saying that I'll finish this one and knock it on the head only to convince myself to go again, and again, and before you know it Vampire Survivors has taken up my entire evening.
I get that it's niche but it's certainly a game hard not to recommend, try something different, try Vampire Survivors!
Rants
Oh no, addictive games are my achilles heel. It took me over a decade to break free of World of Warcraft! Anyone invested time into that? It's like digital crack, in so universe am I demonizing video games or being one of those rebelling against them for such reasons but some things can really get into your veins and that was one of them for me. Vampire Survivors is another, I dream of collecting those shiny blue gems, I daydream of the opening a chest animation and have nightmares about the death sequence of every character as they just appear to sink into a puddle of blood as I curse at the screen about how much health I had left and how that totally shouldn't have happened! Good times.
The Good
Very addictive
So much content
Simple while complex
The Bad
Very addictive
Frustrating at times.
