- TriviaThe shooting of the film went off smoothly. It was much publicised as the first Hindi film shot completely in America. The problem started when Jag packed off all his negatives to India because the film's dubbing was supposed to take place there. As luck would have it, the customs confiscated the negatives of the film saying it was a foreign film and that Jag did not have a importer's licence. The National Film Development Corporation which was supposed to help out, didn't. As the film gathered dust in the cans, someone from the customs department finally decided to help Mundhra out."He said he would auction my negatives and that he would not make the auction public. I ended up buying my own film which was delay by two years." "At that time the going had got difficult for me because I had to support my wife and my newborn baby. Suraag had cost me around $ 400,000, which amounted to Rs 4 million in those days. Those were tough days. But Suraag helped me get my foot in the door.
"I also realised that theoretical knowledge was insufficient. I learned to swim by jumping into the water and thrashing aboAftertherelease of Suraag, Mundhra closed his theatre forever But while making Suraag, he realised he could not believe the ludicrous scenes in Hindi films. "I realised in the comic scenes between Mehmood and Shubha Khote that my heart was not in it and that those scenes seemed ridiculous to me." So he tried his hand at serious cinema.

Suraag review :
Directed by Jagmohan Mundra (aka Jag Mundhra) known more for his soft porn English movies; Suraag was an interesting suspense thriller he made in the late '70s. Unfortunately, the film's negative got stuck with the Indian customs which delayed its theatrical release by around two years.
The film starred Sanjeev Kumar and Geeta Siddharth as a couple living in Los Angeles who help their friend Parikshat Sahani search for his bride. The marriage takes place in India and the bride (Shabana Azmi) is to arrive in LA after securing her visa. But the day she lands in America, the lady goes missing and Parikshat is hounded by a blackmailer...
Jag Mundhra's direction was competent; Sanjeev Kumar was reliably restrained as always and Parikshat did well in the meatiest role of his career. Geeta Siddharth was another actor who got a rare lead role here with Sanjeev including a bedroom song. Ooh la la!! Shabana made her presence felt even in a small role. There were quite a few guest appearances like Rajesh Khanna, Hema Malini, Tina Munim, Mehmood and the sexy Asha Sachdev.
Suraag premiered on Doordarshan sometime in 1991 when I saw it. It hooked me so much that I bunked my Class X Maths lecture just to complete the movie. It was later the infuriated teacher told us that quite a few students like me had fallen sick on that day and she wanted to know what was the real reason. Only we knew what the suspense was..Haha!!
