One of the sources of inspiration came when director Hans Alfredson first heard Verdi's "Requiem". He instantly knew that he wanted to use it for a movie.

Errores
This film is set in the 1930s, yet when Sven goes by a toy store during his breakdown, a plush toy of Snoopy can be spotted in the store's vitrine. Snoopy wasn't invented until 1950.

However, during the same scene, many other anachronisms can be seen, such as an 1980s Saab in the background. It is so obvious that apparently the director did it on purpose, possibly to indicate that the class struggle depicted in this film is not a thing of the past.

Stellan's tour de force

This is indeed Stellan Skarsgård's tour de force, playing Sven the fool. Playing a mentally disabled person is a challenge but Skarsgård manages it with grace, like Leonardo di Caprio in 'What's Eating Gilbert Grape'. The movie actually offers quite a few wonderful characterizations from some of the supporting actors as well, like Per Myrberg as the good-hearted farmer, Lars Amble as Bengt the driver or Carl Billquist as the maitre d'. The award for Best Swedish movie of the year was quite well deserved.
