First effort by Philippe Labro, whose best film remains his sophom"re effort "sans mobile apparent" ,a good adaptation of Ed McBain .
"Tout peut arriver" (=anything can happen) would like to be a time capsule of France circa 1969 ,complete with the first "drugstores" .A journalist (Jean Claude Bouillon), back from the USA, asks to interview mister-man-on-the-street : Miss Catherine Deneuve is not exactly what you call the average woman ; in fact the working class is represented solely by an unfriendly look at a truck driver , a bad caricature of what the French call "routiers sympas" .The other people the journalist meets along his way are what the French would later call "bourgeois bohêmes" : the aging parents in their luxury apartment, the long-haired hairdresser who works in a salon for chic ladies (Fabrice Lucchini's debut) ,a British student (Prudence Harrington) on a vital sociological mission : to study the French behavior .Easy come easy go youth who has no problems to make both ends meet .
The hero is in search of his former wife, who seems to have vanished into thin air ; her fate and the English girl's come at the most awkward moment ;the scene of the fire is particularly badly directed.
As for the hero ,he's self-indulgent,pedantic (when he talks of Hemingway ) ,smug, narcissistic ; the movie is about himself ,the director ,with a transparent pseud :Philippe Marlot (Philip Marlowe ,get it?)
