Roger Ebert - Host: Whoops, I see I neglected to describe the plot to "GoldenEye". Well, it pits Bond against a criminal mastermind from the old Soviet Union, whose plan is to seize control of a satellite and use it to destroy earthbound communication systems, giving him global domination. In other words, this is more or less the plot of every James Bond picture. I enjoyed "GoldenEye" for what it was, though, and I give it thumbs up.
Gene Siskel - Host: Well, that thumbs up comes as a surprise, because I didn't get a sense at all that you enjoyed this picture.
Roger Ebert - Host: I'm sorry.
Gene Siskel - Host: I certainly didn't. I certainly didn't.
Roger Ebert - Host: You didn't?
Gene Siskel - Host: No, I didn't. I think that he isn't an interesting Bond. I liked Connery, and everybody else has been NOTHING compared to Connery. Frankly, Roger Moore is a, has a more commanding physical presence than this guy. I thought this was an average picture, it's a routine story just like you said, uh...
Roger Ebert - Host: Well, they're ALL routine stories, let's face it.
Gene Siskel - Host: No, some, let me tell ya...
Roger Ebert - Host: Most of them are.
Gene Siskel - Host: No no, the classic ones, the Connery ones.
Roger Ebert - Host: Well, there are, the first three.
Gene Siskel - Host: Of course, those are classics. And those are the ones I recommend, I can't recommend this picture at all.
Roger Ebert - Host: What I'm saying is, it did have some amazing shots in it.
Gene Siskel - Host: Only in the beginning! Only in the beginning!
Roger Ebert - Host: When the guy is free-falling after that airplane...
Gene Siskel - Host: Only at the beginning.
Roger Ebert - Host: That's kind of amazing.
Gene Siskel - Host: Roger, you're talking about thirty seconds. If a good friend of yours asked you whether they should go see it, would you say yes?
Roger Ebert - Host: What about- what about the chase scene? What about the chase scene with the two cars? What about the tank? That was pretty neat.
Gene Siskel - Host: If I asked you, "Should I go see it?", would you tell me yes?
Roger Ebert - Host: I, do you know what I'd tell ya? Do you like James Bond? Then you'll probably like this better than some of the others.
Gene Siskel - Host: No, if you like James Bond, you WON'T like this.
