I'm writing before I've completed the entire movie. As long as it isn't a nonsensical, out of left field final act, my score and review will need no edits. If it does drop the ball before the end zone, I'll be back to change my review.
Anyone looking for action driven, martial arts violence, with lots of explosions will rate this low. The 3.5 this movie currently holds should be ignored if you enjoy drama that's not revealed in a rapid manner.
There's a scene early on where the father is eavesdropping on his daughter & the drifter they saved. His obvious satisfaction with what he's hearing is pleasing to see and it's conveyed from his POV without any dialogue.
The movie is sensually pleasing without the rated R material most films use to pry us from our dollars. I'm a 55 year old male, this movie wouldn't have interested me thirty years ago. Today, it is an escape into a world with no reason to hold onto hope and yet, mostly, they do.
It's not gritty like a Tarantino flick, not at all, but there are difficulties our characters must overcome.
There's also another story being told in flashbacks that combines some suspense in a drama manner. Not in the manner of a thriller, not dramatic drama 🙄 😀. Waiting for a resolution to the current issues is matched somewhat by the waiting for the resolution to the past.
It's a good take a break during winter in the recliner with a blanket and a cup of coffee or cocoa movie. I believe if people rated this movie based upon its intended depictions, they'd be more kind than 3.5.
