Hongyu "Neo" Li is an award-winning screenwriter and director. He was born in Beijing, China, where he received a BA in Journalism before moving to Los Angeles for his MFA at the New York Film Academy.
Neo Li's short films include Hank and Waiting For Frank, which have received international recognition, including at Palm Springs International ShortFest, Cleveland International Film Festival, Chicago International LGBTQ+ Film Festival, and more than 30 other festivals. He has developed a range of multi-cultural projects in both the USA and China. Most recently, his screenplay My Chinese Neighbor was selected as the 2020 New Reality Screenwriting Program Finalist, and also reached Semi-Finalist status at the 2021 Nashville Film Festival and also at the prestigious Austin Film Festival Script Competition.
Li is the new In-House Writer and Development Executive at Starlight Media, a film financing and production company based in Beverly Hills and publicly listed in Hong Kong. Run by Peter Luo, Starlight Media is responsible for such projects as CRAZY RICH ASIANS, WUHAN WUHAN, SCARY STORIES TO TELL IN THE DARK & MALIGNANT.
In his creative and development role at Starlight, Li is responsible for generating ideas, treatments, pitches and scripts, as well as guiding producers and writers in the development of content, in order to curate a growing slate of film and TV projects within Starlight's creative ecosystem. Starlight pairs seasoned and generous mentors such as Donna Gigliotti, James Wan and Robert Zemeckis with up-and-coming young talent who have joined the "Stars Collective", a program that supports diverse and authentic voices through mentorship and project development opportunities.
Says Li: "To earn the attention of audiences within today's crowded streaming platforms, Starlight wants to tell stories that have something real to say, but also innovate in the way those stories are told. That's why I'm excited to collaborate with creators with diverse and unique perspectives."
