J. Simon Allen grew up in a working-class family in Colorado. His first film, Mr. Marceau, a magical-realism parable about a reclusive clock-collector who has lost all concept of time, features a single character who never utters a word in the film. The Condemned, a western thriller, takes place over one day, where a roguish gun-for-hire forces a condemned man into the wilderness to dig his own grave. Perhaps due in part to his upbringing in the wide expanse of the American west, Allen is a devotee of large format storytelling and a passionate advocate for the theater experience. He is based on the east coast, is a husband and father and plays drums in a rock 'n roll cover band.
