One of a group of inmates of Alcatraz Prison involved in a famous
escape attempt on May 2, 1946, during which several prisoners and
guards were killed. Thompson was tried for the death of a guard
murdered during the incident, found guilty, and executed in the gas
chamber in December of 1948.
