On November 7, 1958, Morphy--apparently despondent over the death of his mother and serious financial problems--shot and killed his wife. He then ended up in a physical confrontation with her mother, killing her (possibly accidentally; she hit her head on a coffee table when he pushed her off him). After telephoning a friend, he shot and killed himself.
