Werewolves is a film that promises much but delivers little. The premise of a world overrun by werewolf-infected humans is certainly intriguing, and the film's trailer hints at a chaotic and bloody spectacle. However, the film itself falls short of these expectations.
While the concept is solid, the execution is rather lackluster. The werewolf design feels dated and underwhelming. The film's trailer hinted at a high-octane, blood-soaked thrill ride, akin to The Purge. Yet, the actual movie feels more like a low-budget Resident Evil game, with clunky dialogue and predictable plot twists.
Yet, these very flaws lend the film a so-bad-it's-good quality that might endear it to fans of cheesy horror.
What Werewolves lacks in finesse, it makes up for with its relentless energy. The chaotic street scenes, the frantic survival sequences, and the madcap absurdity of it all create a kind of unpolished charm. Frank Grillo (the films lead, Wesley Marshall) and Katrina Law (his gunslinging Dr sidekick) deliver serviceable performances, though the script gives them little room to shine. Kamdynn Gary (Wesley's niece) adds a touch of heart as a family member caught in the fray, but the emotional stakes never quite hit home.
Despite its shortcomings, Werewolves has the potential to become a cult classic. Its unapologetically campy execution and earnest commitment to its ludicrous premise make it a perfect watch for horror fans who appreciate a good laugh with their scares.
