The most bizarre horror film I have ever seen. And my first "Coffin Joe" experience.
The film begins with an extended poem, over images of the solar system and the universe. Then we see a strange ceremony full of dancing girls in billowy nighties, men wearing ape and animal masks in their underwear, all dancing around to the sounds of tribal drumming. A coffin is then brought in, and out rises director Jose Mojica Marins aka Coffin Joe, who has a short beard and a top hat, and finger nails so long they curve around on themselves(like those Guinness book of Worlds Records guys).
Then after a montage of cemetery statues, as the titles roll. we see a small hotel, whose rooms become filled with a couple having an affair, a few men playing cards, a group of bikers in an orgy, etc. Shots of these people doing just what I described are inter-cut with Joe, starring ominously at the camera from behind the front desk, and muttering more metaphysical nonsense. And for the most part this is how the movie goes, towards the end all of the characters begin to suffer terrible fates, accidents, murders, spontaneous eruptions of violence, etc. When a man gets shot, fireworks fly from his skull and blood drips down the camera lens. Oh and there's a twist at the end, that I wont get into.
This description cannot fully explain this movie. Nothing can. I was bored at times, but mostly so baffled by the whole thing it held my attention. Brazilian horror, is a strange thing. Like another universe. I don't know where you would find this, but apparently Marins, made allot of movies with this character. I watched it mainly because of the title, it was irresistible. All I can really say of this movie is its, one of a kind.
Those looking for mostly naked pleasures may be disappointed.
