Shabana Azmi later regretted doing the role - which was regressive by her standards - that of a wife who after suspecting her husband and separating from him ends up being a passive sufferer in her brother's house rather than become an independent bread winner. Also though both husband and wife are equally to blame for the rift - the husband character came across as the righteous one and the wife was 'blamed' and made to apologize in the climax. Patriarchical directorial values of those times. Shabana stated she only signed the film due to the director saying he would shelve the entire film if she did not agree to do the film.

Restrained divorce melodrama

Watchable divorce melodrama with restrained yet emotional performances by Azmi and Khanna being the highlight of the film. Many of their dialogues have the ring of truth. However the rest of the film with the exception of Sriram Lagoo feels ordinary with the usual cinematic clichés. Long but never boring.
