Non canto più

I guess it's fair to call "Non canto più" ("I'll Sing No More")a minor little program filler. It involves the theft of a necklace from a female theatrical impresario and the singer falsely accused of having stolen it. The thing is, she had actually faked the theft as a publicity stunt. The girl who is in love with the singer assists in helping prove his innocence, paving the way both for the man's future career and the couple's matrimony. Riccardo Freda directed the whole routine little comic piece with a light-touched flair. The acting is acceptable and there are some amusing moments, often provided by the supporting cast. But there is ultimately very little to engage anyone here, and all the boring talk about the whereabouts of the wayward necklace descends into the grip of tedium. I would like to know why this movie was arbitrarily set in Mexico, with occasional costumes, haciendas, and place names to remind you of that presumed fact. It makes no sense here and is very unconvincing. Many of the Italian movies of the Fascist era were also set, without rhyme or reason, in Hungary.
