A very lovely music video of Alanis Morissette that uses of great creativity to compose its reflective story of paralel lives, paralel situations
revolving on life, relationships and the bittersweet illusions that keeps us alive.
She co-stars with former actor Lucas Babin, and they play a couple in two different realities presented simultaneously on split screens: the typical young couple of modern times and the fairytale couple of dames and knights.
Love and romance, then difficulties and separations, are all told at the exact same time, but with obvious differences along the way. Charming differences too, as evidenced how in the past the man would carry the lady over an obstacle (a river) that in the future doesn't affect them (a puddle of water); and also the visual style with the fairytale being overcome with animated effects while the other one is completely real.
"Precious Illusions" (the song) covers a great deal of sentiments and experiences that wouldn't translate much to the screen, but the idea toyed in this video gave some interesting definitions, even if they create different ideas and different feelings. Are both situations happening, as a present Alanis wonders about a past life in a different era, or it's a fantasy of what young girls dreams about life and romance, going against the reality she's experiencing?
And it comes with a small twist at its conclusion that also makes us question about the relationship status of her and the man, if they were ever together or if she's imaginging a potential future. So many theories and so many relfections, all valid and it's one of those cases where you might engage in a conversation.
There's so much going on there and that all makes it fun to watch it over and over, and the song is also one of her best, though not so popular as it could be. And the presentation of everything was simply fabulous, not done much these days in terms of concept and stories. 10/10.
