J.G. Alexander created this film to distract himself from the issues he faced during Year 12 in 2016. In the former half of the year he portrayed the role of Edna Turnblad with critical acclaim in his school production of Hairspray. He started the production of the film in the latter half of the year so he could tell his story to people without actually discussing his issues.
