Don't be fooled by its glossy veneer. The filmmakers and cult members present this so-called "community" as a utopian, albeit unconventional society where men make the decisions, women obey the men, and they all live happily ever after. In Gloriavale, nobody has to deal with everyday troubles of "worldly people," including having individual bank accounts and a 9-5 job, but they somehow all get along well as the men learn to be mechanics and disciplinarians and the women learn how to have scores of children and cook and clean for hundreds of cult members.
For those familiar with cults, Gloriavale teems with red flags - signs of mind control, coercion, and sexual abuse are dotted throughout. On the other hand, those who are new to Christian fundamentalist "communities" may miss these signs, instead taking the narrator's word that these people live simply, but happily.
If you find yourself watching this series, do yourself a favor and Google this group afterwards. You'll find many dark and disturbing facts that are entirely absent from this series. The commentary is excessively laudatory to the point of suspicion. Don't believe everything you watch. Doing your homework, especially in these types of cases, is critical if you want the full picture.
