Transformation

I had no idea what being transgender meant going into this film. After watching it I have a whole new appreciation for the life that these brave people live each and every day.

In summary the documentary focuses on a group of transgender youths in the LA area who look to get a makeover from a passionate trans hairstylist. Each person reveals what their transformation into their respective gender roles was like and what they hope to accomplish with their makeover. The interviews contain a lot of raw emotion from young people seeking, and later finding the confidence they need to live their new found lives to the fullest.

The documentary does a great job of not labeling the transgender community as a group of people who deserve our sympathy, which would be an easy mistake to make. Instead, it's a documentary that empowers transgender people. It lets everyone who is watching know that these people are in fact living out their lives as the person they see themselves as and they simply want to be treated as such. Again I would consider myself ignorant of transgender life before watching this film and I feel as if the documentary gave great insight into what it truly means to be trans and what the common misconceptions are.

Overall I gave it a 10 because I honestly feel as if I left with a completely new perspective on gender roles. Documentaries are supposed to open eyes and start conversations and this film does all of that. I highly recommend it to anyone looking to educate themselves about the transgender community or for anyone who is transgender and feels alone.
