A little hard to form an opinion on this one since it doesn't have a comprehensive view of its treated topic, it's strangely confusing in what it
wants from its audience or its actual proposition. Walter Lima Jr. Directs, edits and photographs (the latter has five other cinematographers, including
future director Bruno Barreto) a brief observation about Bossa Nova, a genuine Brazilian music genre that conquered the world with its smoothness in
everything, from voice, sound and lyrics, and Lima Jr. Presents some of its most notable contributors, musicians and lyricists through tiny bits of
interviews, archive footage and the beautiful landscape of Rio de Janeiro where the genre is mostly associated. There's a little reflection about Bossa
Nova and its new variations in the late 1960's, almost as if the genre was transforming with such intensity that didn't feel like the genre existed anymore.
I like Bossa Nova and I admire authors/artists such as Tom Jobim, Vinicius de Moraes, João Gilberto, but it's not like I'm totally versed on the topic, neither have the patience to listen to two songs of it in a row. Plenty of respect that is needed and deserved, as something geniunely ours and that there are artists like Sarah Vaughan, Frank Sinatra and many others who loved it to death.
The issues about this exact piece is the lack of coherence with interviews that aren't reflective, curious or interesting to watch, it's bits and pieces of ramblings with Tom Jobim playing flute and piano but sharing very little about what they thought about Bossa Nova and its importance or lack of appeal in the late 1960's/early 1970's; many random images of artists who flirted with the genre but were creating something else like Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil and Chico Buarque, the active MPB of that period. The quality of images are amazing, but it's all that there is. It does not inspire new fans to get to know about Bossa, and gives to old fans some nostalgic moments here and there. Not a total waste of time since it's just 10 minutes long. 5/10.
