Dear Esther (2012) began as a mod for Half-Life 2: Episode Two (2007) back in 2008. It received almost universal praise for its design and atmosphere, sparking an overhaul that improved the graphics and tweaked the level layouts. The project continued to grow until early 2012 when the completed version was released.

Certainly, the landmarks are now so familiar to me that I have to remind myself to actually see the forms and shapes in front of me. I could stumble blind across these rocks, the edges of these precipices, without fear of missing my step and plummeting down to sea. Besides, I have always considered that if one is to fall, it is critical to keep one's eyes firmly open.

More experience than a game but a good one.

Overall an enjoyable once and only once experience.

This feels more like an experience than a game (well a game is an experience but you know...) but it was immersive and effecting to simulating the feeling of walking in an abandoned place, finding secrets and reflecting on the life of transient joys and regrets I never had. I regret a lot, just from a different life.

So it's a lot of walking, just exploring for its own sake with interment blasts of audiobook where it's more about sound wistful than genuine storytelling but I learned to love the cold, semi-nostalgic quality.

I was able to get all but one of those narrations in one try so it's not fiendishly hard.
