The CBC was a "preferred partner" for the relaunch of Doctor Who in 2005, reportedly paying the BBC $700,000 per episode in presales, which helped finance the show's first four seasons. With the Planet of the Doctor, the CBC intended to provide background information on Doctor Who to Canadian viewers outside of the country's large and loyal fan base who were less familiar with the history of the series.

Sawyer: The Doctor... taps into a very primal core in us about what it means to be a man of action and what it means to be a leader and what it means to take responsibility for what you're doing. And that speaks I think to a very innate sense of personal responsibility in us, and in that sense he's an archetype and he's also a role model.

Crazy Credits
The main closing credits appear over interview clips treated with a mosaic camera view to simulate the K1 Robot's sight. Mixed with the background music is a re-creation of the sound heard during K1's POV shots in the 1974 Doctor Who story 'Robot'.
