Fantastic Four has always been one of Marvel Comics most entertaining and interesting teams, but unfortunately, they struggle to portray that onto the big screen. Fant4stic gives an interesting new take on Marvel's First Family by disregarding the strong familial relationship and replacing it with a work-place acquaintance relationship. This makes all of the characters feel like they are barely tolerating each other instead of loving and caring for each other. While the actors are not bad, the script gives them nothing to work with other than stilted dialogue, awkwardly shoehorned catchphrases, and exposition. The entire start of the film is full of boring, drawn out set-ups, that struggle to hide that fact that the film wants you to believe that near 30 year old men are playing the part of high schoolers. With the most interesting parts of the film being set in Planet Zero (Negative Zone), the rest blends together withe every other scene taking place in a gray government facility. One of the biggest crimes of this film is that it is completely forgettable. With over an hour of origin, it gives a mere 20 minutes of 'payoff' in the form of a fast paced rush to the finish line. I left this film feeling that they knew they wanted a tight-knit family team, but were not sure how to get there, given the story they planned on telling. This gave a mixed bag of a plot, pacing, and quality. With even the director bashing this publicly, one thing that can be agreed upon is that these four are anything but fantastic.
