'Pixel Pinkie' (2006-2008)
Opening thoughts: Despite some of my recent reviews for animated shows being a lot less encouraging than usual, this review is coming from a person who has loved animation ever since seeing Disney's 'Cinderella' for the first time as a toddler. And as someone who has had a number of contrarian views over the years when it comes to animation (i.e. Not caring for 'Pokemon', not considering 'The Wild Thornberrys' that bad), while also knowing when something is awful (the animated 'Titanic' films and 'Foodfight' deserving of their panning).
There is not much else to add to what has already been said here. The concept for 'Pixel Pinkie' was not an inspired one and sounded really derivative, and the execution is even more derivative than it looks and sounds on paper. There are marginally worse animated shows, one that are much more offensive and irritating, but everything here in 'Pixel Pinkie' is so lazy and bland and it always bothers me to see something that looks like not much effort went into it.
Bad things: Absolutely nothing is good here. It is hard knowing where to begin with the criticising. The animation for starters consists of very flat colours, unfinished looking backgrounds, very generic character designs and stiff character animation, so calling it very bad is a major understatement. The music sounds cheap and would have belonged better in the early 90s or something, it sure doesn't sound like anything from the late 2010s.
'Pixel Pinkie' is incredibly poorly written, with an over-reliance on very cheap, overly dumb humour that would be insulting even to children. Humour that has a very recycled feel and with no original idea or joke of its own. Emotionally, there is nothing. No depth, no pathos or heart, there is not even enough emotion to be remotely sentimental. The storytelling in all the episodes is as unoriginal as one can get, much of the time it is so derivative that people cannot be blamed for considering the show a rip off. The storylines are all incredibly dull and by the numbers re-hashes with no life or energy in any shape or form.
With 'The Fairy Odd Parents' agreed being a blatant influence, even non fans of that show (am one of those sadly, never really got into it) are very likely to appreciate that show after trying to make their way through this one. As annoying and predictable as 'The Fairy Odd Parents' is, at least it actually tried whereas finding any effort in 'Pixel Pinkie' in any component is a real struggle. The characters are personality free, irritating or both, while the voice acting is old fashioned and bored sounding, like even the voice actors knew the show and material were bad and decided to not try or something.
Closing thoughts: Overall, awful.
1/10.
