I know a great deal about Nobu, from my day job at Zagat, but the last place I expected to find him was on a movie DVD for MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA. This shows how stupid the DVD craze and its bottomless maw for "bonus material" has become.
Sure, I enjoy watching Nobu and other giants of the kitchen on TV in the endless array of food shows. But what the hell has this 10-minute segment got to do with the Rob Marshall movie? Absolutely nothing, except the producers of the film are pals of Nobu's, hang out at his restaurant, and gave him a pointless cameo role in the movie as a guy dying cloth.
In the short filler video, Nobu shows us how he prepares three of his signature dishes. They look luscious, and from experience I can vouch they taste great, too. But Nobu is not exactly ready for prime time at Caroline's comedy club. In reference to his buddy and partner in restaurants Robert De Niro, he jokes: "I'm the Cod Father". Yuk-yuk.
