The film was shot mid way, then scrapped. After seeing the rushes, the producer felt Sanjeev Kumar looked foolish as a ladies tailor. The film was then shelved. But after the success of Pati Patni Aur Woh, the producers decided to revive the film. This was due to the thought that Sanjeev Kumar in comedy would be accepted by the masses.

Tailor Made For Sanjeev Kumar

Sanjeev Kumar was one of the most versatile and gifted actors of Indian cinema. He excelled in a variety of roles and gave us numerous memorable films. In Khalid Akhtar's 'Ladies Tailor' he once again displays his comic gift. 'Ladies Tailor' is obviously a comedy and the role of Mehboob seems tailor-made for the actor who seems completely at ease with the character.

The first two hours are full of entertainment. The humour is very effective even though the writing is flawed. The romance between Mehboob and Nikhat was poorly developed and plot holes are apparent. The whole Lucknowi milieu is portrayed wonderfully. The songs are very nice. The lyrics are especially beautiful.

The performances are very good. Needless to say, this is Sanjeev Kumar's film but Pran lends great support as he displays his flair for comedy. As Nikhat, Reena Roy is lovely. However, as Amira, she's miscast. A pretty Aruna Irani does a fine job.

It's in the last half hour that 'Ladies Tailor' heads downhill. Things go haywire after the murder sequence and there's no turning back from the mess.

Yet, that doesn't change the fact that the first two hours made me laugh. No matter what he does, Sanjeev Kumar knows how to entertain viewers.
