Maometto II is not my favourite of Rossini's operas or even one of my favourites. However, it is interesting with great music, Non Temer to this day is still one of the juiciest mezzo-soprano Rossini arias. I did enjoy this 1985 Pesaro performance and do prefer it over the 2005 Teatro La Fenice production. When it comes to the DVD technical values, the Teatro La Fenice is better(this production was transferred poorly). Dramatically, this one is much more convincing. The costumes and sets are suitably atmospheric, and the orchestral playing and conducting are full of style and energy as well as power. Samuel Ramey is superb in one of the most difficult roles of his career, his voice is seductive and velvety and his acting is commanding too, alongside Attila, King Phillip, Assur and especially Mifistofele this role disputes the criticism of Ramey as a poor actor in my opinion. Lucia Valentini-Terrani is a splendid Calbo, especially superb in Non Temer, showing great agility and impeccable passage-work. Chris Merritt is not quite as impressive, his voice is ringing and strong, but his stage presence is rather stodgy. All in all, a superior production overall, very good. 8/10 Bethany Cox
