Boris was produced by the makers of the British series Spitting Image, in which famous people were represented by caricature puppets. Boris's appearance includes the mouth of Mick Jagger, Leonard Nimoy's forehead and Sylvester Stallone's chest from 'Rambo'. Behind Boris are Bert Plagman and Renée Menschaar, two puppet performers who are mostly known as Tommie and Pino from Sesame Street.
