On October 18, 1997, Billboard magazine reported that the Mind's Eye series of videos had sold 1.5 million units collectively. At the time, this number would have included this entry, as well as the previous The Mind's Eye (1990), Beyond the Mind's Eye (1992) and The Gate to the Mind's Eye (1994). In 2005, the Animation World Network website reported that total sales had exceeded 2 million items.

It could have been better.

Being a long time fan of the Mind's Eye series, I was completely disappointed in this latest edition. After successfully surveying some of the best computer based animation in three wonderful volumes, they seem to slack off and go with imagery that has nothing new, and almost nothing worthwhile to offer. Some of it is nice. Some of it is neat to look at. None of it breaks the ground of offering high end imagery to the masses.

The music was also subpar in this edition. After being touched by the work of Jan Hammer, and being blown away by Thomas Dolby, they seemed to have the music take a back seat to an already mediocre offering.

My advice: Go back to The Gate to the Mind's Eye. There's more there worth experiencing.
