I was getting tired of run-of-the-mill repetitive Christmas movies with white actors(I am white). All pretty and handsome. Plots cookie-cutter, etc. Very little creativity. Boring!! So I Googled "black Christmas movies" and I picked this one because I am a retired pediatric nurse and have no kids of my own. I thought the title sounded cute.
What a treat! The plot was not too sappy and it was realistic about foster kids esp. At Christmas, esp. Kids of color, whose lives are lonely moving from home to home. Not enough are adopted. I also liked the sets and what a treat to see all of these famous, wonderful black actors! Many whom have passed away, sadly. And Della Reese singing! And Sammy Davis. Cicely Tyson, Esther Rolle (the image of her unforgettable role in Gone with the Wind), Vanessa Williams, Ben Vereen. And at the end Eddie Murphy-producer!
I never research a film ahead of time. I want to come in and experience the film the first time. But the star of the movie is Trent Cameron, playing Reggie. I just looked him up because I am not familiar with him. Based on the date of the film(1990) and his birth date(1979), he was 11 at the time, although he looked younger. But what an amazing actor!!
So I give this movie a 10 for entertainment, wonderful Christmas story, that kids would love, fun, a moving plot and a phenomenal cast.
