The movie and its source book were based on the case of six-year-old Etan Kalil Patz. He disappeared in Manhattan on May 25, 1979, while walking 2 blocks to a school bus stop. He was the first missing child to be advertised on a milk carton. The case launched the missing children's movement, new legislation, and new methods for locating missing children.

A real tear jerker of a movie

I can't believe that a movie could cause such an emotional upheaval in my body. I cried because the character development between the boy and his mother was very good. Judd Hirsch did a great job as the detective willing to go out on a limb for the mother. This was a good movie back in 1983 and still a good video to watch.
