Ramón del Valle-Inclán lost his left arm in 1899 as a result of a fight with the journalist Manuel Bueno in the Café de la Montaña: while trying to avoid a blow from his opponent's cane, the cane struck the left wrist and embedded the cuff-link in the meat. The apparently minor wound became infected, then gangrenous, and finally the arm had to be amputated.
