The game is clearly based on the events that happened after Ghostbusters - Die Geisterjäger (1984), however it doesn't note the events of Ghostbusters 2 (1989), which suggested there were no major cases after the defeat of Gozer. So the Sega game conflicts with the events of the second film. The game also conflicts with the reappearance of Stay Puft in Ghostbusters: The Video Game (2009), as Ray noted it wasn't him this time, which itself doesn't suggest that the Stay Puft in this game happened. The Sega game also does not follow the canon of The Real Ghostbusters (1986), as the episode "Citizen Ghost (1986)" takes place right after the events of the first film. It is concluded the Sega game is only canon in a timeline that includes the first film by itself.

Alternative Versionen
In March 2024, a fan-made ROM hack of this video game titled "Ghostbusters: Special Edition" was released adding Winston Zeddemore as a playable character.
