The kids are charmed when they meet "Jim Along Josie", a marvelous orangutan who has 20 different ways to make you laugh. It gets even sillier when the very cute "Purple People Eater" comes to earth and announces his intention to be a rock star.

The Essence Awards are the largest event celebrating African-American culture and music in the United States. In Louisiana, the Awards show is locally referred to as the Essence Fest, and the Awards show has been held in New Orleans, Louisiana every year since 1995 except for 2006, when it was held in Houston, Texas due to Hurricane Katrina. It features artists simultaneously performing on a main stage as well as four standing-room only, superlounge stages.

The awards ceremony, with Hosts Vanessa Williams and Sinbad, was videotaped before a star-studded audience at the Paramount Theater in New York City on April 22, 1994.

Taped at New York City's Paramount Theater, honorees included General Colin Powell, Janet Jackson, Stevie Wonder, law student Zoe London & Birthing Project founder Kathryn Hail. Presenters Included Bill Cosby, Oprah Winfrey and Laurence Fishburne.
