Set in the 1880's, Ferenc Kiss, a bandit, has had a long relationship with innkeeper Maria Lazar. The latter falls in love with Paul Javor, a mounted patrolman. But she knows Kiss will take some form of reprisal. Kiss attempts to kill Javor and Lazar, believing that he has, turns him over the the authorities.
