- After joining Canada in 1949, Newfoundland and Labrador underwent significant changes. The decline of traditional fisheries in the 1950s and 60s led to government-led resettlement programs aimed at modernizing the province. Communities like St. Leonard's were uprooted as families were moved from small, remote areas to larger, centralized locations. While these initiatives sought to improve economic conditions, they often resulted in hardship and the loss of tight-knit community bonds. As part of our 75 x 75 Project, we present "Out from St. Leonard's", a piece that delves into the personal stories of those affected by resettlement. Join us in reflecting on this profound chapter of our history and honouring the resilience of the people who lived through it.

- The Sisters of Mercy (originating from Dublin) established the first Mercy Convent of the New World in St. John's in 1842. The following year, they founded Our Lady of Mercy School, locally known as "Mercy," which they operated as a school for girls until 1992. The Sisters went on to establish several other institutions which have served the St. John's community for decades, such as, St. Clare's Mercy Hospital in 1922, St. Pat's Mercy Home (for seniors) in 1958, and more recently, the Gathering Place in 1994, a homeless shelter which now operates from what was Our Lady of Mercy School. After 180 years of outstanding community service the Sisters of Mercy Convent has now been closed. This represents the end of an era for so many people, particularly the women who graduated from "Mercy." This documentary recounts the profound impact the Sisters of Mercy had on so many NL women, as told by some of their former students, including former St. John's mayor, Shannon Duff, the CBC's own Mary Walsh, and our own Susan Quinn, who is the founder and Artistic Director of QVE. The choir's connection to this project came from Susan's long-time desire to pay tribute to "Mercy" and to get back into the convent chapel, where she sung so often as a child, one last time before it closed. Throughout her career she has always wanted to have one of her choirs sing in that chapel, and finally, just two weeks before the convent was closed and the locks went on the doors, she got her chance. The result was this documentary, shot by Roger Maunder, with QVE providing some vocal accompaniment.
