Based on the diaries of the late Hugh Pacey, the film tells of the harsh life in a late 1960s Catholic, Nun run Boarding School. The harsh regime, harsh discipline, and absolute obedience to the Church. The lead character, Ashley gets herself expelled from the school, is taken home and severely beaten by her God fearing but drunken stepfather. She is then confined under lock and key. Knowing his Father to be capable of extreme violence when drunk, Ashleys brother helps her to escape and she leaves home. She is befriended by a fellow artist Fergus who becomes a mentor to her and helps her build a better life for herself until he is killed in an explosion. After Fergus's Funeral, Ashley disappears. At the school, her friends continue to fight for better conditions. They leave after A levels and start on their working lives. Ashley is always in their thoughts. After a failed IRA bomb plot linked to her, some six years after cutting contact with everybody, Detective Constable Ashley contacts her old friends and invites them to meet up. Here, lives of intrigue, mystery and surprises are revealed. Some pleasant, some horrific. A film based on hard fact, with some fiction thrown in, and a little supernatural.
