    Chapter 1

    Alex Miller picked up the baseball and tossed it back to his best friend.

    Ross Bellinger caught the ball and threw it back side-armed before Alex quickly picked the ball again out of the pocket of his glove and returned it.

    We were probably the best double-play combination in the whole league last year, Ross shouted. Alex couldn’t help but laugh at the remark.

    We only turned one double play the whole year, Alex said. But, yeah, we were still probably the best.

    And definitely the best team in the league, Ross added.

    Definitely, Alex said.

    There was little debate on the subject. The Panthers had streaked through the regular season with 14 wins and not a single defeat. They’d finished the summer by winning the league tournament. Six of the Panthers, including Alex and Ross, had been picked to play on the league’s all-star team.

    We’ll probably be even better this year, Ross shouted again, if we can keep our same team together.

    Probably not much chance of keeping the whole team together, Alex replied. Besides, we’re moving into the Upper League and we’ll have to play against 10-year-olds.

    Yeah, I’d forgotten that, Ross said.

    The boys hadn’t forgotten that, though. Ever since that magical summer had ended, the boys had been dreading the thought of not playing on the same team the following year. They would both have to attend tryouts, something they hadn’t been forced to do the year before. Then, they’d have to be drafted onto a team, simply filling spots on an existing team’s roster.

    Well, hopefully you, me, and Cole will still be on the same team, Ross said. That should be enough to win the league championship.

    Alex just nodded. He thought his friend was being a little too hopeful but didn’t see
