About this ebook
UPDATED August, 2024! With its abundant sunshine, striking natural landscapes and relaxed lifestyle, the Southwestern United States is a wonderful place to retire. Unfortunately, many towns in the Southwest are expensive. Places such as Flagstaff, Arizona and Georgetown, Texas are often hailed as great places to retire, but they have living costs well above the national average. Here, though, are 18 Southwestern towns with living costs close to or below the national average, determined primarily by housing prices. Some of these spots are fairly well known, while others are still off the national radar. All of these places have safe neighborhoods, recreational and/or cultural amenities, a local or nearby public library and local or nearby accredited medical facilities. Each also has a welcoming quality that makes it a desirable place to live. No one place is perfect, however, so we take a look at each town's drawbacks as well.

18 Affordable Southwestern Retirement Towns - Kris Kelley
Introduction
What states comprise the Southwestern United States? Opinions vary, but for the purposes of this book the region includes Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas. This area is characterized by abundant sunshine, striking natural landscapes, big skies and a relaxed lifestyle.
Unfortunately, many towns in the Southwest are expensive. Places such as Flagstaff, Arizona and Georgetown, Texas are often hailed as great spots to retire, but they have living costs well above the national average.
Here, though, are 18 Southwestern towns with living costs close to the national average. Some are slightly above the national average, but many are below. This is determined primarily by housing prices (which have increased greatly during the last few years). Some of these towns are well known, while others are still off the national radar.
All these places have safe neighborhoods, recreational and/or cultural amenities, a local or nearby public library and local or nearby accredited medical facilities.
Each also has qualities that make it a desirable place to live. No one place is perfect, however, so we also look at each town's drawbacks.
Buckeye, Arizona
Once a Sleepy Desert Outpost, Today Buckeye is Fast-Growing and Home to Master-Planned Communities
Buckeye is 35 miles from downtown Phoenix and is the westernmost city in the Phoenix metro area. Its agricultural heritage is visible in the surrounding acres of cotton and alfalfa, which is an unexpectedly green landscape in the desert. The Estrella Mountains loom in the distance.
Just a sleepy little desert village until developers arrived about 20 years ago, today Buckeye is sprawling and growing incredibly fast, increasing its population by 72% within the last decade. Yet town leaders think it will take another 25 years before the city is completely built out.
This is the land of master planned communities, with 30 or more, including Sundance, Festival Ranch and Verrado. Attractive, sleek and mostly large, many of these developments have palm trees and Spanish Colonial or Mediterranean architectural themes.
Buckeye Hills Regional Park sports primitive biking paths, hiking trails, camping areas and views of the Gila River riparian area. The town sponsors an air fair, a community yard sale, Pioneer Days, a Spring celebration, a dog festival and much more.
Restaurants options are mostly national chains. Three golf courses have a Buckeye address. Sundance Towne Center has major and minor national retailers.
Buckeye still has some rough edges, with low slung commercial buildings, sagebrush, and
