    Chapter 1: A Diner Date

I stood awkwardly in the door of the diner and stared down at my phone. The diner was one of those greasy places, with off-colored counters and the heavy smell of old bacon in the air. But I could catch a whiff of pancakes in the distance, and my stomach grumbled in response. It was well into the evening, and I had spent the afternoon studying. Pancakes were the best thing I'd heard all day.

I re-read the email again uneasily. It had a description of her, short and thin, with long black hair, but no picture. I thought that the description would be enough to find her—I doubted a restaurant like this would be populated with a lot of short, thin, college-aged girls, even late at night when its normal clientele had gone to sleep. But for some reason I was stuck in the doorway unable to figure out what she was supposed to look like.

Around the time I was just about to change my mind and leave, someone waved at me. Someone short with long black hair.

A wave of relief rolled over me and I trotted over to her table.

She smiled and pushed a plastic menu over at me as I sat down.

    Danielle? I asked.

Marla, she said and smiled. She had bright red lipstick on, and managed to pull it off without looking trashy. I couldn't help but smile at her; there was something...nice about her that I didn't expect from her emails.

You looked a little nervous up there, she said, and put a spoonful of tea in her mouth. Her voice was smooth and luxurious, as if you took french vanilla and turned it into a sound.

Oh, yeah, I just... I shrugged and glanced over the menu. Don't really go to places like this, you know? Also you didn't have a picture of yourself or anything.

Danielle tilted her head slightly, not out of confusion, but out of curiosity, like she was studying me.

Do you not like meeting people in public?

Oh, no, it's not that, just—

    She smiled. You're very shy.

    Well, yeah.

A waitress came over, and glanced purposefully between us. Can I get youse anything? she asked.

Short stack of pancakes, I said, with blueberries. I mimed drifting them over top.

Yup. You? She turned to Danielle.

I'm fine. She tapped the side of her cup.

The waitress nodded and bustled off.

So! I said, and pulled a printout out of my purse. A couple questions!

Of course. She ran a fingertip around the rim of her glass. Her nails were short and perfectly shaped, little ovals on the tips of her fingers, and painted in a pale nude.

You said that you work for a security company?

    Mmmhmm.

    "Near where my apartment
