Shiv Maha Puran - Munindra Misra

    Shiv Maha-Puran

    Quotes

In virtue and sin, I do not dwell,

Neither in joy nor sorrow's swell.

No mantra holds me, no sacred rite,

    No pilgrimage of fervent might.

Vedas and yajnas, they're not my feast,

I'm not the eater, nor the beast.

In food and hunger, I take no part,

For I am the conscious heart.

I am the bliss, the eternal dive,

In every breath, in every life.

In form and formless, I do live,

I am Shiv! I am Shiv!

    यं डाकिनीशाकिनिकासमाजे निषेव्यमाणं पिशिताशनैश्च।

    सदैव भीमादिपदप्रसिद्धं तं शंकरं भक्तहितं नमामि।।

To Lord Shankar, my salutations rise,

    Bhimashankar, known in the skies.

In the realm where the moonlight plays,

And the cosmos in awe, silently lays.

Served by demons, Shakini, Dakini kin,

    In their hearts, devotion's hymn.

In the dance of shadows, in the silent night,

In their service, they find the light.

A devotee true, in every sense,

In the vast divine, the only essence.

In the echoes of the cosmic drum,

To you, O Lord, the devotees come.

So here's my prayer, my humble plea,

In your grace, may we all be free.

In the rhythm of the cosmic dance,

In your name, we find our trance.

In the quiet of the morning, when the world is still,

I remember Lord Shiv, with a tranquil thrill.

Destroyer of fear, the world's guiding light,

Devesh, Gangadhar, in the soft morning light.

    Vrishabavahan, Parvatipati, names of divine,

With Khatwang and Trishul, in your hands they shine.

A unique form of medicine, to heal the world's pain,

In your presence, no ailment can remain.

Abhay and Varad, stamped on your hand,

Symbols of protection, across the land.

The one who eradicates worldly diseases, the divine healer,

In your name, every heart finds its revealer.

So, in the morning, as the sun begins to rise,

I remember you, Lord Shiv, the wise.

In your name, the world finds its peace,

In your grace, all fears cease.

    Song

    (Verse 1)

In the heart of sacred texts, where truth and wisdom blend,

    Lies the tale of Shiv Maha Puran, a divine message to send;

It speaks of Lord Shiva, the destroyer, the transcend,

A symbol of change and renovation, on whom all depend.

    (Chorus)

Sing the song of Shiv Maha Puran, let the melody rise,

    Echoing through the mountains, under the infinite skies;

In every verse, a teaching, in every line, a prize,

To navigate life's journey, to reach the divine highs.

    (Verse 2)

From the dance of Tandava, the cosmic energy's flow,

    To the silence of meditation, the inner peace we know;

It's a saga of creation, preservation, and letting go,

A testament of life's cycle, in the cosmic show.

    (Chorus)

Sing the song of Shiv Maha Puran, let the rhythm roll,

    In the dance of life and death, in the divine stroll;

It's the symphony of existence, in its ebb and its toll,

The Shiv Maha Puran, a balm for the soul.

    (Bridge)

In the verses of Ved Vyasa, in the tales so grand,

    We find the path to liberation, the divine command;

Through the Leelas of the Lord, we understand,

The eternal truth of existence, the cosmic strand.

    (Chorus)

Sing the song of Shiv Maha Puran, let the harmony play,

    In the chorus of creation, in the divine ballet;

It's the song of the universe, the truth that'll stay,

The Shiv Maha Puran, the spiritual pathway.

    (Outro)

Sing the song of Shiv Maha Puran, let our spirits soar,

    In the realm of divine wisdom, where our hearts explore;

With the Shiv Maha Puran, we unlock the door,

In the melody of the divine, we find the core.

    Introduction

In the cosmic dance, the tale began,

Unfolds the divine, the Shiv Puran.

Shiv, the lord, in his eternal stance,

    Sati's love, their celestial dance.

Her end in fire, Shiv's heart torn,

    From her ashes, Parvati reborn.

Through penance and love, she wins his heart,

A new chapter, a fresh start.

Ganesh and Kartikeya, their divine birth,

Their tales of valor, fill the earth.

From Kailash peak, to the river so grand,

Echoes the love, across the land.

The damru's sound, the third eye's gaze,

In the Shiv Puran, forever stays.

Om Namah Shivaya, the sacred lore,

In the Shiv Puran, forever to explore.

In the realm of wisdom, the tale began,

    Vidyavara Samhita, the divine plan.

    Knowledge and wisdom, Shiv imparts,

    Guiding the seekers, enlightening hearts.

Rudra Samhita, a tale so grand,

Creation, Sati, Parvati, in this land.

    Kumara's birth, Shiv's battles fierce,

In every heart, these tales pierce.

Satarudra Samhita, a sight to behold,

A hundred forms of Rudra, the tales unfold.

    Kotirudra Samhita, a spectacle vast,

One crore Rudras, a shadow they cast.

Uma Samhita, a tale of grace,

    Parvati's love, time cannot erase.

    Kailasa Samhita, where divinity resides,

    Mount Kailash, where Shiv abides.

    Vayaviya Samhita, the sages revere,

    Shiv's teachings, crystal clear.

In the Shiv Puran, these tales we find,

A spiritual journey, for the seeking mind.

    Sage Shaunak Inquiry

Sage Shaunak to Sutji did inquire,

In Kali's age, what means inspire,

To reach Shiv, cleanse the mind's mire,

    And correct inherent tendencies dire.

Sutji declared this Shiv Mahapuran purely,

Supreme of all purans, from Shiv initially,

    Retold by Vyas, Sanatkumar's decree,

For the true blessing of humanity, ideally.

Sutji said, "Understanding Shiv Maha Puran's history,

Singing its praise - man gains virtues surely,

Attained by charity or `yagyas' performed duly,

Contemplating on the Shiv Maha Puran truly.

Just like a 'Kalpa-taru' tree holy,

Shiv Maha Puran with 24007 shlokas surely,

Is the best means for man's liberation fully.

Sage Shaunak then asked Sutji humbly,

The proper method to hear this in actuality,

So that mankind reaps benefit completely.

An auspicious time should determined be,

    Friends, relatives then invited freely,

Especially those who tend to be,

    Away from such occasions clearly.

The sages and the virtuous men certainly,

Should be invited to this event unfailingly,

'Katha' heard in places as Shiv temple holy,

Or sacred place of pilgrimage dedicatedly.

It can be heard in one's home truly,

After a Bhumi Pujan of the land purely,

Purifying the place and atmosphere fully,

Canopy well decorated, after worshipping Ganapati.

This Katha should be commenced surely,

Priest facing north, listeners facing east purely.

The priest telling the 'Katha' should be,

A scholar capable of clearing doubts fully,

No distraction during 'Katha' should be,

So, all can comprehend the 'Katha' truly.

A devotee, who listening to the Katha be,

Must leave behind all worldly worries,

The offerings be per devotee’s capacity,

Else he becomes a wretched person sadly.

    Throughout the Katha unfailingly,

Shiv Mantra must be chanted repeatedly,

'OM NAMAH SHIVAY' – very sincerely,

Focusing mind on Shiv and Katha only.

An uninitiated person has no right truly,

To listen to the Shiv Maha Puran story,

So, a man desirous of listening surely,

Should first get self initiated unfailingly.

A devotee who has taken vow truly,

Of listening to Shiv Maha Puran story,

Should sleep on floor, eating fruits only,

Have normal dinner after end of story.

He should avoid all sinful tendencies,

Of lust, anger, greed, attachment fully,

Of condemning others. – at peace be,

And donate per capacity - it virtues be.

After methodical completion of this story,

    Devotee must perform UDDYAPAN truly,

The brahmans honoured, charity given be,

Who helped in performance of this story.

Next day, Shiv Gita should performed be,

If devotee is householder, Havan must be,

With cow ghee for unimpeded ceremony,

Of 'Rudra Samhita' or 'Gayatri Mantra' fully."

    [A] Vidyeshwar Samhita

    Sages Query of Duties

At Prayag, the sages' yagya was in spree,

    Sage Sutji, hearing this, arrived with glee;

All sages, seeing him, were filled with glee,

And earnestly, they made a plea:

"We've heard many tales from you, so free,

About man's benediction and the key,

But today, in Kali Yug, we wish to see,

    Something special, a remedy.

All classes have forgotten their decree,

We wish to know if there's a strategy,

    To prevent society's rapid decree,

Of the human values of humanity."

    Sutji replied:-

"In Kali, your enquiry holds the key,

Shiv Maha Puran, a blessing it be,

    The essence of Vedantic philosophy,

Offers salvation and pleasures, a guarantee.

Mere remembrance destroys sins, you see,

Who remembers Shiv Maha Puran, is free,

    Who studies Rudra-Samhita, attentively,

His gravest sins are destroyed, instantly.

    He who studies 'Rudra-Samhita' silently,

In front of Bhairav-idol, achieves victory,

If deliberate around a Banyan tree,

Freed from sin of slaying a brahmin, he be.

    'Kailash Samhita' is superior, surely,

Than Rudra Samhita, as it elaborates freely,

Upon the meaning of Omkar, the key,

Shiv Maha Puran, by Lord Shiv Himself, it be.

    It contained 1,00,000 shlokas, initially,

Then 24,000 shlokas, by sage Vyas, you see,

The present Shiv Puran, the fourth one be,

Which consists of 7 Samhitas, actually."

    Proposition & Means

Sutji spoke, in 'Svet Varah Kalp' prime,

Six sages gathered at Triveni, in time.

Debating who was the deity divine,

Among Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh, the line.

Their debate remained, no conclusion in sight,

To Lord Brahma, they sought the light.

Brahma spoke, with all his might,

"O revered Sages, listen to the right.

The source of Vishnu, Rudra, all deities bright,

Including myself, and all creations in sight,

Is none other than Mahadeo, the light.

Union with Shiv, should be man's flight.

To reach the height, hold Shiv's qualities tight,

Sing his praise right, with all your might.

Contemplate on him, in day and night,

These are the means, to unite with Shiv's light."

    Kirtan, Contemplate, Listen

In worship and chant, the mind finds elation,

This act of divine love, we call contemplation.

In hymns of the Vedas, or in our own narration,

Singing devotional songs, is Kirtan's foundation.

These acts of devotion, in every situation,

Are the supreme means to attain liberation.

    Through contemplation, Kirtan, and adoration,

    We journey towards spiritual emancipation..

    Shivaling Greatness

According to Sutji, in his divine narration,

If one can't follow Shravan, Kirtan, and Manan's vibration,

Then worship the Shivaling, with pure dedication,

Even this path leads to worldly liberation.

Describing the majesty of Shivaling, Sutji's revelation,

    "Lord Shiv, Almighty God's manifestation,

Known as NISHKAL, the divine foundation,

His beauty makes him SAGUNA, a beautiful creation.

The term SAGUNA, also known as SAKAL,

Shivaling symbolizes Shiv, in every locale.

Worshipped since ages, in every festival,

Yet, Shiv is NIRGUNA, beyond any rationale."

"In the first Kalpa of Swetvarah, a tale,

A battle between Brahma and Vishnu, on a grand scale,

To prove their superiority, they set sail,

But Lord Shiv manifested, making their efforts frail.

He showed them his form, the Shivaling, so pale,

From that day, its fame began to hail.

Shivaling, a symbol of Shiv, beyond the veil,

A path to liberation, a divine trail."

    Deities go to Mount Kailash

Nandikeshwarji tells a tale, of a battle so grand,

Between Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu, in a distant land.

Once, Brahma, while travelling, reached Vishnu's abode,

Saw Vishnu resting on Shesh-Nag, in a peaceful mode.

Attended by Garuda and others, in a humble ode,

But Vishnu didn't rise to greet, which on Brahma goaded.

Anger flared, words clashed, and egos exploded,

A verbal duel erupted, and a battle unfolded.

It raged on, with no end, as time eroded,

All the deities watched, their worries snowballed.

Seeing the battle rage, with no end in sight,

The deities were filled, with a terrible fright.

They decided to seek help, to end their plight,

To Lord Shiv, they turned, their beacon of light.

    Pillar of Fire

"Though Lord Shiv knew all, feigning ignorance, he sought,

About the world's well-being, the deities brought.

They told him of the battle, Brahma and Vishnu fought,

Lord Shiv then sent his Ganas, peace they sought.

He too went there, with Parvati, a chariot they caught,

Seeing Brahma and Vishnu, with deadly weapons wrought.

Fearing destruction, a solution he thought,

Manifested as 'Analstamba', peace it brought.

Their weapons, Maheshwar, Pashupat, into fire, they shot,

Both were destroyed, their efforts for naught.

Brahma and Vishnu, surprised at the sight,

A pillar of fire, reaching great height.

Vishnu transformed into a boar, sought,

The base of the 'Pillar of fire', but found it not.

Brahma, a swan, flew in the light,

Met a withered 'Ketaki', holding on tight.

Lord Shiv smiled at their futile flight,

The Ketaki flower fell, from a great height.

Told Brahma, it had been there, since first light,

But the 'Pillar of fire's' origin, was out of sight.

Brahma sought Ketaki's help, to set things right,

To falsely witness, he'd reached the pillar's height.

Ketaki agreed, they went to Vishnu's site,

Brahma claimed success, Ketaki confirmed the sight.

    Vishnu accepted Brahma's might,

But Lord Shiv, angered at the slight,

Moved to punish Brahma, for the oversight,

Vishnu requested mercy, for Brahma's plight.

Lord Shiv, pleased with Vishnu, in the night,

Accorded him status, equal in his sight."

    Shiv Obliges Brahma

Nandikeshwar continued the tale, with a sigh,

"After giving Vishnu equal status, in the sky,

Lord Shiv opened his third eye,

    From it, 'Bhairav' did fly.

He ordered Bhairav, with a cry,

To kill Brahma, who was nearby.

Bhairav severed Brahma's fifth head, oh my!

Brahma trembled, fearing he would die.

Lord Vishnu felt pity, hearing Brahma's cry,

Requested Lord Shiv, his mercy to apply.

Shiv stopped Bhairav, with a sigh,

    But
